My name is Miko (pronounced “Meeko”) and I live in Southern California. I was born in Hungary on August 21, 2014 and in December, when I was just 3-1/2 months old, a stranger bought me after seeing my photo on the breeder’s website. I was put into a plastic travel crate the next morning and I traveled that way – for almost 5 days - from Hungary to Germany before my crate was loaded into the cargo hold of a plane. When I landed in the U.S. at San Francisco International Airport, I was too exhausted to be scared anymore and I was relieved to meet my new family. I heard them say “Wow, she’s SO big!” then just a few hours after I arrived, they took me to a veterinary hospital and I heard them ask the vet to euthanize me. The kind veterinarian persuaded the owner to relinquish ownership of me to the veterinary hospital, and when they did, I was relinquished to Akita Angels. Now, I know that this story sounds unbelievable, but it’s true.

I am lucky. I am also living proof that sometimes people buy an Akita without knowing anything about the breed or thinking it through. When that happens, a perfectly perfect Akita like me needs rescue. Without your support, Akita rescues cannot help dogs like me, and without rescues, Akitas like me will die.

My Mommy tells me all the time how much she loves me and I am now an Ambassador of Akita Angels and ambassador of the breed. Sometimes, I hear Mommy telling people that I was rescued, and I know this is good because lots of people think that Akitas in rescue are broken or not beautiful or magnificent like me. I think that no matter where an Akita comes from or what their story is, with love and commitment all Akitas can become a great Akita like me.

This is my 7th year supporting Whisker Walk, and I hope that you are touched by my story and will help me raise funds for Big East Akita Rescue (BEAR).
