He stole the room when he walked in – people would just look at him. Even other dogs saw it in him. There was just something about him that drew the eye, not just his outer beauty, he had such quiet confidence. You couldn’t miss it when you met him; and wouldn’t forget it once you had.

Jazz was my friend, my protector, he was my boy. I talked to him all the time and he would look at me like he knew what I was saying – he knew when I was happy or lonely or sad, I can’t tell you how many tears were shed into his fur. Or how many times his woooo would make me smile. He helped us when we lost Oso, and then Kat poking and prodding wanting his walks but really I felt he was saying “Hey Mom – you can’t just sit here and cry, you gotta get on with it, we have things to do”.

I learned from him how important dignity is when that is all you have left. And he taught me something I never wanted to know – that Akitas really WILL stay for you – that one day early is better than one minute late…no matter how much it hurts. I hope I wasn’t late Bubba….

Someone told me that they only stay until they have taught us everything they need to  -

But it was not enough – it is never enough.

I love you Jazz with all my heart – always.

Jazz

12 years, 6 months 8 days - 4 leap years, 12 Christmases, 4000 rides and as many walks – it was not long enough.

Someone told me that dogs only stay until they have taught us everything they need to  -

In 12 ½ years Jazz taught me so much –

He taught me about life and living it as much as you can for as long as you can – never give up and never give in. About joy and finding it in the smallest thing – a walk, a ride a nap in the sun on the bed, a frog in the pool…That puddles and ponds are wonderful – but bees and porcupines suck. And green beans are NOT food! That no day is complete without a ride and a walk.

He never met a walk he did not love, 5 minutes or 3 hours didn’t matter.  He had to go every day that it wasn’t raining or snowing and heck an awful lot days even when it was. He loved to be outside with his pop – following the lawn mower or just sleeping under the hammock. Helping me in the garden, which meant lying in the garden bed I was working in!

He hated the show ring but he did it – he preferred to sit ring side and watch the other dogs. I think that the thing he disliked most was the bath – but every bath was followed but joyous zoomies and a game of keep-away…Washing his whites was my life when he was showing! He never knew that he was so well known – but he sure got offended if someone didn’t stop to pat him on a walk!
