Sadly, Nik is no longer here on earth to walk for Akita rescue but his spirit lives on in the hearts of many. As an Akita lover it has always been important to me to help our Akita rescue groups. After Nik’s retirement from the show ring, I looked forward to having him become a Whisker Walker for B.E.A.R. as I hoped because so many either knew him or followed his career that we could help raise some funds for Akitas in desperate need. Please donate to help Big East Akita Rescue continue to saving Akitas from dire situations.

Nik had a larger than life personality and was everything I could want in a male Akita. A big and powerful body with the sweetest puppy like heart inside. He was a dog that would do anything asked of him. Even with this sweet and outgoing personality, he still knew friend or foe and knew when protection was needed.

He always had his mouth open with his big smile and glimmer in his eyes. Although Nik was not raised around babies, small children and small dogs, he loved them!

He was always trying to make eye contact with someone new so he could start showing off his cute personality and win them over. Throughout the years we were constantly told by people that met him that he made them think differently about the breed they were previously wary about.

He was a strong and athletic dog that would stand up on his hind legs like a bear and actually walk 6-8 steps when he was excited. He loved to do this and loved the attention he received. He was not taught this, it came instinctively.

Nik was very affectionate and loved hugs and snuggling. He would back his back up against ours in bed.

He was a wonderful trainer and playmate to our puppies over the years.

Nik passed on his wonderful temperament to his get and with limited breeding he sired 26 AKC champions, several group winning/placing Akitas, several BISS winners and one multi BIS winner.

He loved the show ring from the start and it was there that he truly shined! Nik is the Top winning Akita in Breed history and one of the Top winning Working dogs in AKC history by having won 100 Bests In Show.

We traveled the country and he loved meeting new people. After retirement Nik did miss the show ring. We worked on other titles for fun and he received the AKC Farm Dog title as well as Rally Novice. I really wanted to get him into therapy work as he would have loved this but just when we were moving forward with this the Covid lockdown started.

Nik had extensive surgery in December 2021 to remove a very small anal adenocarcinoma tumor and a very large benign tumor from his liver, followed by several rounds of radiation in January 2022. We thought we were in the clear as CT scans showed no metastasis, however by March of 2022, I knew something was very wrong. We committed to Whisker Walk in June 2022 and I knew deep down it was going to be his last. Nik walked that day in June and again helped raise funds for Big East Akita Rescue.

    NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY

      Nature’s first green is gold,
      Her hardest hue to hold.
      Her early leaf’s a flower;
      But only so an hour.
      Then leaf subsides to leaf.
      So Eden sank to grief,
      So dawn goes down to day.
      Nothing gold can stay.
