"I was part of the 70+ akitas rescued out of a situation in Georgia 2.5 years ago by BEAR and foster momma Carla, my littermates and me were part of the Christmas Miracle Litter. I now live in the Poconos with my big sister Kitara.
I have worked very hard with my Mom to earn several AKC titles , seemed more like fun to me! When I was 20 months old I started to get sick and was diagnosed with something called UVEODERMATOLIGIC syndrome, which is a autoimmune disorder that affects my eye sight, loss of pigmentation of my skin and nose, as well as whitening of my coat. So I had to take a few months off from activities to get better.
Currently I am stable (have some flare ups) with the medication and LOTS and LOTS of eye drops. Eventually I will become blind. For now I have a whole team of doctors helping me and I am a good boy for monthly bloodwork and eye exams. Since I have been on the upswing, I earned my NACSW Nosework 1 title and recently passed my Therapy Dog Test with Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dog! Maybe as a therapy dog I can help humans who have lost their sight like I will.
I can't do afast Cat anymore, because I might have an episode with loss of sight, even though I love it. But Mom said there are other things we can do, and I do love scentwork. I like road trips too- but ones to doctors not as much. I get to see things I never thought existed and love all the wild smells. Mom said I am Akita Strong and that this will all be familiar to me when I go can't see any more."
Aspen's story highlights the importance of perseverance, the power of a loving support system, and the impact of raising awareness and funds for other Akitas facing similar health struggles.
Our dream is for every BEAR to have a family adventure- Would You Help us make this dream come true?
